I’ve never

done anything so final as leaving here.

These are the dying days.

The people I see are smiling ghosts I can still hear but no longer touch.

Like Vienna, oblivion will find me whirling.

Feel this:

That feeling you get when you pick a book just on the edge of your awareness that you know nothing about, and feel its world opening up and engulfing your own.

You get to the top

then you turn around and look down, and you say

“how did I get up here?”

and “how will I get down?”

My pants are still wet. I didn’t know that could happen to your toes.

Is it my fault?

when you don’t? When the waterfalls remain hidden in the wood?

Arrogance

September eleventh

I think that I have learned something in the past month about arrogance. Arrogance is a set of habits formed (if you are careless) when you spend too much time around people who are less intelligent (or quality-of-choice) than you are. You interrupt them, or you don’t give their ideas the benefit of the doubt, or you think ill of them and are prone to ignoring them. You may be right to do these things (I think you aren’t). But if these behaviours become habits that manifest even in the company of people who are as or more intelligent than you, they become arrogance.
